Monet painted Camille Doncieux many times. They married in 1870. After her death in 1879, he lived with Alice Hoschedé. They married when her estranged husband died in 1892. Monet often painted her, too, frequently in poses and settings which recall his portraits of Camille. Yet while Camille’s face (though apparently beneath a veil) is distinct, Alice’s is unrecognisable.
